BLURB
Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?
Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career.
Summoned to Evelyn’s luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the ‘80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn’s story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique’s own in tragic and irreversible ways.
REVIEW
“No,” she told me. “Because they are just husbands. I am
Evelyn Hugo. And anyway, I think once people know the truth,
they will be much more interested in my wife.”
Look, There are some books that are easily forgettable, god knows I've read so many books like that. and There are some books you will remember for the rest of your life, the characters who just stay with you, books you would sell your soul for to read it again for the first time. This is one such book for me.
This book is a journey, you will cry, laugh and then cry again. I made the mistake of reading the ending on my way home on a bus, and I couldn't for the life of me control my tears. Yes, I got a lot of weird looks.
Most of the books I read, I read fast and rush to the ending, because I want to know what happened I am impatient like that. But this one I enjoyed reading every line and savored it. Why? Because of the journey of Evelyn's life, It gets you hooked from the very beginning. the stuff she went through, the heartbreaks. I could imagine it happening. All of it was written very realistically. Each character had something to contribute and was special with flaws in their own way.
There were no perfect characters in this book, I love that. There were so many beautiful and amazing side characters which In itself can be a whole other review.
In the same way, Evelyn Hugo had a huge impact on Monique's life, It had a huge impact on mine.
The truth is not always shiny, dreamy, and beautiful which is the epitome of Hollywood, the truth is ugly, It is not always right or wrong, good or bad, black or white. The truth is more complex than that. But maybe It is not complex at all, maybe in that truth people can find happiness and family. Imperfect people who lift you up, and above all you can find love.
Evelyn went after fame and money, but In the end, she realized what makes life worth living is not a mansion and 5 cars. It's people you love.
"When you write the ending, Monique, tell everyone that it is the people I
miss. Tell everyone that I got it wrong. That I chose the wrong things most
of the time".
I think this book is a must-read for everyone. If I could give more than 5 stars I would.
P.S.: I kinda want this book to be made into a movie, to experience in a different way and for everyone to see, but I kinda don't want this to be made into a movie, because I fear it will not match up with my imagination ahh.
